It is with a heavy heart that I make this statement tonight. As you now know, my campaign has come under fire thanks to a few unfortunate photographs of me that surfaced today.
I would like to take a few moments to explain myself as well as I can, so that the media will not have to guess about what happened and extend this very difficult chapter in my life. Nearly two weeks ago, I began my campaign for University of Iowa Student Government president. I assembled a staff and began the day and night effort of running a come-from-behind campaign.
During the long nights on the campaign trail, I became acquainted with a woman working as an intern on my campaign. I was very much looking for an escape from the stress; as an outlet, I began trading sexually suggestive materials with this intern. At no point did we have physical relations.
I can not express how sorry I am for betraying the trust of my supporters, my staff, my family, and - most of all - my wife Beth. I ask that media respect my family’s privacy as we work through this difficult time.
It is with the deepest sorrow that I am suspending my campaign for UISG President indefinitely.
The past few weeks have been some of the most rewarding days of my life, I owe you all a debt of gratitude for that.
As UISG President I will not spend University money to fund concerts or frivolous programs. I will put YOUR money to work for YOU by solving the problems that real students face.
I will fight for diversity, community, student health, and safety for everyone.
We have plenty of organizations on campus that help us have a good time. Student government should be about helping people and standing up for the well-being of the student body. Plain and simple.
Check out my first campaign print ad! It should be getting up around campus tomorrow!
My Interview with KRUI Student Radio! -
I was very happy to sit in with KRUI for my first public interview since 2001!
I believe that we can do great things for the human and potato communities through student government.
Let us stand united and cry out with one voice for all people!
For too long, student government has been about flashy ideas and fanciful solutions to over-sized problems. Let’s bring it down to a personal level and use student government to heal and unite. — Potato
