Campaign Statement 4/5/12
It is with a heavy heart that I make this statement tonight. As you now know, my campaign has come under fire thanks to a few unfortunate photographs of me that surfaced today.
I would like to take a few moments to explain myself as well as I can, so that the media will not have to guess about what happened and extend this very difficult chapter in my life. Nearly two weeks ago, I began my campaign for University of Iowa Student Government president. I assembled a staff and began the day and night effort of running a come-from-behind campaign.
During the long nights on the campaign trail, I became acquainted with a woman working as an intern on my campaign. I was very much looking for an escape from the stress; as an outlet, I began trading sexually suggestive materials with this intern. At no point did we have physical relations.
I can not express how sorry I am for betraying the trust of my supporters, my staff, my family, and - most of all - my wife Beth. I ask that media respect my family’s privacy as we work through this difficult time.
It is with the deepest sorrow that I am suspending my campaign for UISG President indefinitely.
The past few weeks have been some of the most rewarding days of my life, I owe you all a debt of gratitude for that.
